If it again crashes to desktop during the new game. Then you need to edit few things. Open your root folder of fallout 3 then you would find a file named “Falloutdefault.ini” open that file, it should open it any text editor. I downloaded the d3d9.dll file, then made a copy of it and named it d3dx9.dll, renamed the fallout3 folder to fallout 3, set the comptibility to XP.

Fallout: New Vegas - D3D9 Performance Fix (Nvidia)

This dll fix will replace a current bug in the game where it will try to guess your video card and then render the game very slowly and bleakly.

Download this .dll and watch your frame rate go up across the board almost instantly.

'This .dll file is essentially a light-wrapper for a 'supported' video card's .dll, which tricks the game into configuring its FaceGen software (which was causing a performance problem) in a more efficient manner.' (HT @ '4000qails')

This will make your game run nearly like fallout 3 ran on your same computer. Like it should since there was very little visual improvements.

Must have 'winrar' installed to unpack the file before putting in game directory.

This works with both Ati and Nvidia however the one at the below link is IMO the superior choice for ATI cards. It allows transparency AA so things like trees and grass will look much better if you have AA on.

cheers to Aleksei for his work.

Drop in 'fallout new vegas' folder to force the game to use this dll instead.

If in right place launcher rescans/defaults settings. (After it defaults settings and shows as a '7900' or '8600' if you use 2nd file then *** remember to redo your preferred graphics settings.***)

I have a quad core/5870/8gb ram and perf was awful until I did this. I instantly got 4x framerate during 'goodsprings event.'

-sometimes crashes with 2 monitors

-most people report crashes with crossfire or SLI

-2nd file does not work on my ATI 5870 it may work better for you.

-It goes in your regular game folder not in the 'data' folder with the mods.

I've been receiving a lot of emails about this, so I thought it important to finally speak out about it. An unofficial 'fix' to performance issues in Fallout: New Vegas has been doing the rounds for the past week as some sort of global solution to all problems. I do not recommend this D3D9 Fix at all, as it causes Fallout: New Vegas to falsely redetect your graphics card as a lower model, and in turn use a lower shader package. It can reduce image quality and cause a range of long-term problems. A much better solution is to use the ToggleEmotions (temo) console command in each Fallout: New Vegas session to temporarily disable facial emotions on NPCs, thereby removing the major source of the slowdowns which may occur in areas where there are several characters. This method will not reduce your image quality or cause other potential problems. This is also a good time to remind everyone that PC gaming does not involve any quick fixes. If you're having performance issues in Fallout: New Vegas or any other game, the correct solution inevitably involves properly optimizing and maintaining your entire PC, along with research and intelligent tweaking of the game, not just grasping at the first quick fix that happens to come along. Additionally, official patches and driver updates resolve many of the legitimate problems, so some patience is also involved.
